In many households, the holiday season is a time for baking. There’s nothing like being overcome by the decadent scent of melting chocolate as you walk through the door, or gathering in the kitchen with loved ones to dish out the ingredients for warm trays of peanut butter blossoms and sugar cookies.
Perhaps your family has a Christmas cookie that is essentially the sweet-treat mascot of your close-knit tribe. Or maybe there’s a recipe that’s been passed down for ages that everyone gets super excited to begin baking come December. No matter your baked-good of preference, General Mills has put together a map of the hottest holiday treats in the U.S., state-by-state.
The way the cookie crumbles
According to General Mills, the map’s predictions are based on the Betty Crocker, Pillsbury, and Tablespoon cookie recipes that get the most visits from holiday baking enthusiasts. So, it could even inspire some brand new recipes to sneak their way into your kitchen this year.
And even if you’re looking at this map, duly aghast, thinking: “my state’s cookie does not align with my baking traditions”, that’s fine too. The map could at least serve a fun conversation starter at holiday get-togethers — right alongside a tray of aromatic, freshly-baked cookies, of course.
The most popular cookies in the U.S.
After looking at the map, it’s clear that peanut butter blossoms are the most popular Christmas cookie in the U.S. They’re the most visited cookie recipe in seven states — and with good reason. Objectively, they are delicious (unless you have a peanut allergy or don’t like peanut butter).
